Switchable Glazing & PDLC Film

Smart Glass Dubai: Switchable Privacy Glass & PDLC Film Solutions

PDLC smart glass changes from frosted privacy to transparent in under 100 milliseconds by applying 48V-65V AC low-voltage power. It gives Dubai offices, clinics, hotels and villas instant visual screening without curtains, using either factory-laminated switchable glass or electrically controlled film applied to existing glazing.

SEG | SMARTEGLASS designs, supplies and installs complete switchable glazing systems across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Our scope includes glass or film selection, laser measurement, transformer sizing, concealed cable routing, busbar protection, controls, commissioning and coordination with fit-out, electrical and building-automation teams.

Technical Reality: The transparent state requires continuous low-voltage power. When electricity is removed, the glass returns to its default frosted condition. Even when powered, residual haze of approximately 2.5%-3.5% may be visible under strong lighting or at acute viewing angles. Smart glass provides privacy, not optical invisibility or bedroom blackout.

How PDLC Switchable Glazing Operates: The Liquid Crystal Principle

PDLC smart film contains microscopic liquid-crystal droplets dispersed inside a polymer layer. Without power, the droplets sit in random orientations and scatter incoming light, making the panel appear frosted. When voltage is applied, the crystals align and allow light to pass through, producing the transparent operating state.

PDLC means polymer-dispersed liquid crystal. The switching action involves no mechanical blinds, moving louvres or internal rollers. A correctly specified system switches repeatedly in less than 100 milliseconds and can achieve a rated service life exceeding 80,000,000 switching cycles, subject to manufacturer certification, correct transformer output and suitable operating conditions.

The transparent state typically provides visible light transmission of approximately 86%. It remains brighter than a closed blind while allowing the room to change between open visibility and diffused privacy.

The technology does not create a perfectly invisible pane. Transparent PDLC retains slight haze, particularly when viewed along the glass at a sharp angle or when strong sunlight strikes the panel. In the privacy state, close silhouettes can still appear when a person or bright fitting is positioned directly behind the glazing.

Laminated Smart Glass vs Retrofit Smart Film: Technical Comparison

Laminated smart glass is manufactured as a sealed glazing panel with the PDLC layer protected between glass sheets. Retrofit smart film is a self-adhesive electrical film installed onto suitable existing glass. Laminated construction is preferred for new partitions and wet areas; retrofit film suits dry, serviceable existing glazing.

For new meeting rooms, bathrooms, doors and permanent partitions, SEG recommends custom laminated smart glass panels. The protected PDLC layer is less exposed to cleaning, impact, moisture and accidental edge damage. Laminated construction also provides post-breakage retention when specified to the appropriate safety-glass standard.

Our retrofit self-adhesive smart film allows existing clear glass to be converted without replacing the complete partition. It is suitable for dry internal offices, reception screens and villa glazing where the substrate is flat, clean, undamaged and accessible.

Retrofit film should not be treated as a universal substitute for laminated glass. Existing glass must first be checked for type, condition, dimensions, edge quality and safety suitability. Exposed film edges, busbars and cable exits require careful detailing. Self-adhesive film is not our preferred specification for continuously wet shower enclosures.

Technical comparison between laminated smart glass and retrofit smart film
Design consideration Laminated smart glass Retrofit smart film
Best application New doors, partitions and wet-zone glazing Existing dry internal glass
PDLC protection Sealed within the laminated panel Applied to the accessible glass face
Moisture suitability Suitable when properly edge-sealed and detailed Not recommended for direct wet-zone exposure
Existing glass replacement Required Normally not required
Visual finish Factory-controlled panel construction Dependent on existing glass and site application
Safety-glass strategy Designed as part of the new panel specification Existing substrate must already be suitable
Cable detailing Coordinated within the new frame and rebate Surface or concealed routes require site coordination

Commercial and Residential Applications Across the UAE

Smart glass is specified where immediate privacy, daylight and clean interior lines are required within the same opening. UAE applications include DIFC executive boardrooms, healthcare consultation rooms, Palm Jumeirah master suites, hotel bathrooms, management offices, reception areas and private meeting spaces in Business Bay commercial towers.

For corporate interiors, smart glass allows a boardroom to remain visually open between meetings and become private at the wall switch when required. It can be incorporated into new commercial glass partitions in Dubai, subject to suitable framing, door hardware, cable access and acoustic requirements.

Healthcare clinics use switchable glazing for consultation and treatment rooms where staff need controlled visibility without fabric blinds. Privacy-state operation must be included in the room-use procedure because the system defaults to frosted during a power interruption.

In villas, smart glass can screen bathrooms, dressing rooms, home offices and master suites. Laminated panels are preferred for new wet areas. Hospitality applications include internal bathroom screens, spa rooms and premium suites where curtains would interrupt the architectural finish.

Specialist geometry may also be possible through architectural curved smart glass, although radius, panel size, lamination build-up and processor capability must be confirmed before the surrounding joinery or framing is released.

Technical Specifications and UAE Climate Resilience

A UAE smart glass installation requires more than an electrical film and transformer. Glass temperature, UV exposure, moisture, cable containment, ventilation and access for maintenance must be considered. SEG coordinates the system with applicable Dubai Civil Defence low-voltage requirements, project electrical specifications and Dubai Green Building Regulations under Al Sa'fat.

Technical specifications of SEG SMARTEGLASS PDLC systems

The transformer should remain accessible for testing and replacement, even when concealed above a ceiling or inside joinery. Primary mains wiring must be completed by an authorised electrical contractor. The low-voltage output must not share unsuitable containment with power or data circuits where the project specification prohibits it.

Automation and Building Management Integration

Switchable smart glass can be operated by a wall switch, touch panel, RF remote, occupancy logic or an approved building-automation interface. SEG systems can be coordinated with KNX, Crestron and Lutron controls through correctly selected relays, dry contacts and automation programming completed by the responsible specialist.

The PDLC film must receive the specified AC operating voltage from its transformer. It should not be dimmed or connected directly to an automation output unless the electrical design explicitly permits that arrangement.

A typical villa installation uses a local wall switch for everyday control with a parallel command from Crestron or KNX. Commercial projects may use scheduled control, meeting-room scenes or a central reception command. Manual local operation should normally remain available for maintenance and fault diagnosis.

Where several panels operate together, transformer capacity, cable length and switching groups must be calculated. Oversized circuits, unsuitable dimmers or excessive voltage drop can cause slow switching, uneven transparency, flicker or premature product failure.

Smart Glass Price in Dubai: What Dictates Project Cost?

Smart glass price in the UAE depends on measured panel area, laminated glass construction, film type, transformer capacity, control method, cable routing, framing, access and installation conditions. A simple dry-office retrofit costs less than a new laminated door or wet-area panel requiring specialist sealing and concealed electrical coordination.

Quoting only a square-metre rate can be misleading. Small panels still require busbars, cable tails, a transformer, controls and commissioning. A smart glass partition with several independently controlled panels needs additional transformers, circuits or automation channels.

Cost is also affected by glass thickness, toughening, lamination, Low-E or tinted substrates, holes, notches, curved processing and access restrictions. Night work, tower permits, ceiling removal and long cable routes can materially affect installation labour.

Frequently Asked Questions

These answers cover the main technical and commercial questions asked by clients considering smart glass Dubai installations. Final suitability depends on the existing glass, room use, moisture exposure, panel dimensions, electrical access and required controls, all of which should be checked before materials are ordered.

What is the price of smart glass per square foot in Dubai?

There is no responsible universal square-foot rate for a completed smart glass installation. The price depends on whether the work uses retrofit film or new laminated glass, the number of panels, transformer sizing, framing, cable routes, controls, access and automation requirements. A measured quotation is more accurate than multiplying glass area by a material rate. SEG surveys the opening, confirms the electrical scope and issues a project-specific price covering the agreed system.

Does switchable smart glass provide 100% total blackout for bedrooms?

No. PDLC smart glass provides visual privacy through light scattering, not total light blackout. The frosted state still transmits diffused light, and close silhouettes may remain visible when strongly backlit. Bedrooms requiring darkness should combine smart glass with a blackout blind, curtain or another opaque layer. Transparent-state haze of approximately 2.5%-3.5% should also be expected under strong acute-angle lighting.

What happens to smart glass during an electrical power outage?

The glass returns to its unpowered frosted privacy state. This default condition is often useful for bathrooms, clinics and meeting rooms because visual privacy remains when power is unavailable. If a project requires transparent emergency operation, that requirement must be discussed during design. Backup power, controls and fire-safety interfaces need formal electrical coordination rather than an informal site modification.

Can switchable smart glass be safely installed in Dubai bathrooms and shower screens?

Yes, using a properly manufactured laminated smart glass panel with moisture-protected edges, IP65 sealed busbars and protected cable terminations. The transformer must remain outside the wet zone in a ventilated, accessible location. SEG does not recommend exposed retrofit self-adhesive film for continuously wet shower areas. Glass safety, waterproofing, seal positions, hardware and electrical zoning must be coordinated with the bathroom design and applicable project requirements.

Can smart glass integrate with existing villa automation systems such as Crestron or KNX?

Yes. Crestron, KNX and Lutron systems can control smart glass through approved relay or dry-contact interfaces connected to the PDLC transformer circuit. The automation contractor must programme the switching logic and confirm electrical compatibility. SEG provides the glazing load, transformer details and control requirements. Local manual switching can be retained alongside the automation command for practical daily use and maintenance.
