Pocket Sliding Doors in Dubai: How the Wall Cavity Works

A sliding glass door that retracts into a purpose-made wall pocket, keeping the open doorway clear and the door leaf out of sight.

A pocket sliding glass door slides into a cavity inside the adjoining wall, so the leaf disappears and the doorway stays clear. Your contractor builds the cavity, and SEG supplies and installs the pocket system. The cavity needs enough length and depth, clear of pipes and cables. SEG checks your wall at a free survey.

A pocket sliding system takes the door leaf into a cavity within the adjacent wall when it opens. This frees the visible wall area from a surface-sliding panel and avoids a hinged-door swing. The pocket is part of the construction, so it needs to be planned with the door.

For a Dubai villa renovation or new interior, pocket doors can help connect rooms without leaving a parked leaf on display. SEG coordinates the glass and sliding hardware with the wall detail, finished levels and access requirements for projects across the UAE.

What it gives you

  • Door leaf retracts into an adjacent wall cavity
  • No swing arc within the room
  • An opening that can feel less interrupted when the door is parked
  • Pocket dimensions coordinated with glass and hardware
  • Servicing access included in the construction detail

How it works

The leaf runs along a supported track into a prepared pocket. The cavity needs sufficient length, width and clearance for the door, guides and hardware. Services, fixings and insulation in the pocket zone must be coordinated so they do not obstruct the moving leaf.

Track maintenance should remain possible after the wall is finished. The detail needs to show how runners, stops and the panel can be adjusted or removed. Fully concealing the mechanism without a service route can turn a simple repair into building work.

In an existing property, assess the wall before assuming a cavity can be created. Structural elements and electrical or plumbing services may restrict the design. If the pocket is impractical, a surface-sliding or hinged option may solve the opening with less disruption. Send the wall plan and construction information at the start of the enquiry.

Pocket doors in UAE villas

The wall decides everything. Before choosing a pocket door, find out what the wall beside the opening is made of and what runs through it.

New build or fit-out. This is the easy case. The cavity is planned with the wall, services are routed around it and the track support is built in. If walls are not closed yet, decide on a pocket door now.

Renovation. Possible in some walls, but harder. Structure, services and finishes all matter, and some projects need a new lining or partition. If the wall cannot take a pocket, a ghost sliding door or a single sliding door can solve the opening with less disruption.

Block walls and partition walls. Villa interiors are often blockwork or stud partitions. Cutting a cavity in blockwork means real builder's work and repairs to finishes, which your contractor carries out. A stud partition can often be rebuilt with the cavity included. We find out which you have at the survey and check that the system fits the prepared wall.

Pipes and cables. Sockets, switches, pipes and cables cannot sit in the pocket zone. A wall that backs onto a bathroom needs extra care, because moisture and pipework limit what is possible.

Access for maintenance. Humid air and dust reach a hidden track like any other, so the detail must show how the track, rollers and panel can be reached and removed after the wall is finished. Agree this before finishes close.

SEG describes its systems as designed for UAE heat and humidity. Read that as design intent, not a performance figure. Your contractor prepares the wall cavity. SEG supplies and installs the pocket system into it, and the survey checks that it fits.

Pocket vs ghost vs single sliding: how do they compare?

Pocket sliding system Ghost sliding door Single sliding door
Wall work A purpose-designed cavity with enough length and width. Your contractor builds the cavity. No cavity. Ceiling or wall must support the track. None beyond fixings and a track.
Space when open The leaf sits inside the wall. Clear wall length beside the opening. Clear side space for the parked panel.
Renovation difficulty Needs the most planning. The wall is assessed first and may need a new lining. Sometimes possible, depending on support. Depends on the side space available.
Look when open No parked leaf on show. Parked panel visible, hardware reduced. Parked panel and frame visible.

Pocket construction and builder's work must be included in the agreed scope. A door opening alone does not establish whether a pocket system will fit.

Pocket Sliding Doors FAQs

Practical answers to help you plan your project.

Is a pocket door the same as a sliding door?

A pocket door is one type of sliding door. A standard sliding door runs along the face of the wall. A pocket door slides into a cavity inside the wall, so the leaf is out of sight when open. That cavity has to be planned and built.

Is there a glass pocket door?

Yes. SEG supplies glass pocket sliding systems: a glass leaf that runs on a supported track into a prepared wall pocket. Glass is heavy, so the track fixing must suit the panel load and the pocket needs an access route for later adjustment.

What are the disadvantages of a pocket door?

It needs a purpose-built cavity, so there is more planning and builder's work. Retrofitting is harder. Pipes and cables cannot cross the pocket. Hidden hardware needs a service route, or a simple repair can turn into wall work.

How much wall space does a pocket door need?

The wall must hold the whole leaf, the track and clearances, with no services in the way. The figures come from the system detail and the opening width, not a universal rule. We confirm them on site, and the datasheet is available on request. Our guide to pocket door wall space explains more.

Can a pocket door be fitted in an existing villa wall?

Sometimes. It depends on the wall structure, thickness and services. Some projects need a new lining or partition. Do not cut into a wall until the construction and responsibilities are confirmed. A photo of the wall is the first step, then a survey.

What affects the price of a pocket sliding system?

Glass type, size, hardware and installation. Your contractor builds the cavity, so that work is arranged and priced with them. Electrical changes and finish repair also sit outside the glass and hardware. Ask for each item to be listed separately. A free site survey comes first, then a written quote.
