RETROFIT PRIVACY

Self-Adhesive Smart Film (PDLC Smart Film) in Dubai: Switchable Privacy for Existing Glass

Switchable privacy for existing glass. Upgrade meeting rooms, offices and villa interiors in Dubai without replacing suitable glass panels.

Self-adhesive smart film is a switchable PDLC layer applied to the surface of suitable existing glass. It looks frosted when switched off and clearer when powered, so in a power cut it returns to frosted. It suits smooth, sound glass in good condition. Our own team supplies and installs it after a free survey.

Self-adhesive smart film is an electrically switchable privacy layer applied to the surface of existing glass. Standard PDLC film changes from a frosted appearance when switched off to a clearer view when powered on. It is a practical option when the glass is in good condition and you want privacy without replacing the whole partition.

A meeting room can stay visually connected to the office between appointments, then become private for a discussion. The same approach can work for a home office, dressing area or selected hospitality interiors. SEG | SMARTEGLASS supplies and installs smart film across Dubai and the UAE after checking the glass and the intended use.

What it gives you

  • Retain suitable existing glass during a privacy upgrade
  • Choose an open view or a frosted appearance as needed
  • Keep diffused daylight when the film is in its privacy state
  • Plan switches, remotes or compatible automation around the room
  • Fit the film to surveyed panel dimensions and edge details

How it works

PDLC means polymer dispersed liquid crystal. An electrical signal changes the alignment of the liquid crystals inside the film, altering how light passes through it. The frosted state scatters light; it does not turn the panel into a blackout screen. Close silhouettes and strong backlighting can still affect visual privacy, while some haze may remain in the clear state.

Installation starts with checking the glass surface, any existing coatings, panel dimensions and frame clearances. The film needs a suitable surface, protected edge connections and a route to its specified power supply. Controls and maintenance access should be agreed before surrounding finishes are closed.

For a renovation, send photographs of both sides of the glass and the approximate panel sizes. Include the room use and whether the surface is exposed to moisture or direct sunlight. These details help us assess retrofit film against a new laminated smart-glass panel and define the installation scope.

Smart film in UAE villas and offices

Smart film is mostly used where the glass already exists: a glass-walled meeting room, an internal glass door, a home office, a dressing area. In a rented unit it lets a tenant add privacy without rebuilding a partition. If you rent, check with your landlord first.

Sun and humidity are the two site conditions we ask about. If a panel takes direct afternoon sun, say so when you enquire. If the glass sits near a bathroom or a splash zone, it needs a technical review before we recommend film, and it should not be treated as an ordinary dry-office job.

SEG describes its smart film systems as designed for UAE heat and humidity. That wording is not a test result or a rating.

On UV: some selected systems offer UV protection. How much depends on the film and the glass, so we confirm it for the product you choose at the site survey, and the datasheet is available on request.

The film is supplied with installation only. SEG does not sell it on its own, and our own installation team fits it to your glass.

The frosted state is not a blackout. It scatters light and still lets diffused daylight through, and close silhouettes or strong backlighting can show. Some haze can remain in the clear state. If you need darkness for sleeping or projection, ask us about a separate blackout solution.

Power is the other thing to plan: a power point near the glass, a cable route and a switch position that is easy to reach.

Care and cleaning. Switch the film off before cleaning. Use a soft, lint-free cloth, lightly dampened, and do not spray liquid directly onto the film. Keep liquid away from the edges and any electrical connections. Avoid ammonia, solvents and abrasive pads. General guidance; confirm with SEG at handover.

Self-Adhesive Smart Film FAQs

Practical answers to help you plan your project.

What is self-adhesive smart film?

It is an electrically switchable privacy layer applied to the surface of existing glass. Standard PDLC film looks frosted when switched off and clearer when powered. It lets you keep suitable glass and add privacy on demand without replacing the whole partition.

Can self-adhesive smart film be applied to existing glass?

Often, yes. We check the surface, coatings, panel sizes, frame, access and cable route first. Damaged, heavily textured or unsuitable coated glass may need a different solution. Our guide on smart film and existing glass explains the checks.

What happens to smart film in a power cut?

Standard PDLC smart film returns to its frosted state when power is removed, so the room goes private. We confirm the behaviour of the film and controller you choose before you order.

How long does smart film last?

It depends on the product, so we do not quote a general lifespan. The datasheet for your film is available on request. Warranty varies by product and is stated in your quotation.

What is the difference between smart film and smart glass?

Smart film is applied to the surface of glass you already have. Smart glass, in laminated form, is a new panel with the switchable layer sealed inside. Choose film to keep suitable glass, and laminated glass for new partitions or replacement glazing.

Smart film or blinds?

Smart film changes at a switch and keeps diffused light in its private state. Blinds are manual, need no power and suit simple jobs. Film needs a power supply and a cable route. The right pick depends on how often you need privacy and what the glass is.

What affects the price of smart film?

Glass area, individual panel sizes, film selection, access and electrical work. The power supply and controller also count. Send photos and sizes, and we quote in writing after a free site survey.

Does self-adhesive smart film provide complete blackout?

No. Standard PDLC film provides a frosted visual barrier while transmitting diffused light. If you need darkness for sleeping or projection, discuss a separate blackout solution.

Can I use smart film in a bathroom?

The location needs a technical review. Splash exposure, humidity, glass edges and electrical protection affect suitability. A bathroom application should not be treated as an ordinary dry office installation.

How should I clean the installed film?

Follow the supplied care instructions for the selected film. Use approved non-abrasive materials and avoid scraping the film or soaking its electrical edges. Ask for cleaning guidance at handover.
