Direct answer

What is self-adhesive smart film?

Self-adhesive smart film is a switchable PDLC privacy layer installed directly onto suitable existing glass. When powered, the liquid-crystal layer aligns and the film appears transparent. When power is removed, light scatters and the glass appears frosted, giving immediate visual privacy.

It is commonly selected when a project needs smart privacy but removing and replacing the existing glazing would add unnecessary time, disruption or cost.

How it works

Privacy controlled through a thin PDLC layer.

The complete result depends on the film, glass condition, edge preparation, electrical system and quality of installation working together.

01

Film applied

The self-adhesive PDLC film is carefully installed onto the prepared glass surface.

02

Power connected

Busbars, wiring and the specified power supply connect the film to its control method.

03

Transparent state

With power on, the liquid-crystal molecules align and allow more light to pass through.

04

Privacy state

With power off, the molecules scatter light and create the familiar frosted appearance.

Applications

Made for spaces that need privacy on demand.

Self-adhesive film works best where existing glass should remain in place and privacy needs to change during the day.

Switch from open collaboration to visual privacy for calls, reviews and presentations.

Modern villa bathroom with glass partition

Villa bathrooms

Create privacy only when needed while retaining a light, open interior at other times.

Why choose it

A practical route to smart privacy without new glass.

01

Keep existing glazing

Suitable projects can upgrade privacy while retaining the installed glass panel.

02

Fast state change

Move between transparent and frosted privacy using the selected control.

03

Clean visual finish

Reduce the need for curtains, blinds and bulky privacy hardware on the glass.

04

Custom configuration

Film, control method and wiring route can be planned around the approved glass layout.

05

Automation ready

Compatible systems can respond to remotes, switches, sensors and smart controls.

06

Privacy plus light

The frosted state blocks direct views while allowing diffused light through the space.

Site suitability

What must be checked before installation?

A site review prevents avoidable issues and confirms whether retrofit film or laminated smart glass is the better solution.

Important
Self-adhesive film is not automatically suitable for every glass surface or wet, exposed or high-risk location. Final selection should follow a technical review.

Glass condition

The surface should be smooth, stable and free from damage, coatings or contamination that could affect adhesion.

Panel dimensions

Exact visible glass sizes, joints and film orientation must be confirmed before preparation.

Edge environment

Frames, sealants, moisture exposure and cleaning conditions affect the required edge treatment.

Electrical route

A safe route is needed for busbars, cables, power supplies, switches and access for maintenance.

Intended use

Privacy level, viewing angle, ambient light and any projection requirement should be discussed early.

Control options

Choose how the glass responds.

Available controls depend on the electrical design and selected equipment. SEG coordinates the film and control route as one system.

Wall switch

A familiar dedicated control for direct clear and frosted operation.

Remote control

Convenient wireless operation where the specified controller supports it.

Sensor trigger

Automate switching based on presence or another approved input.

Smart integration

Connect compatible controls to smart-home or building-management logic.

SEG project method

From glass survey to commissioned privacy.

01

Consult

Understand the room, glass and privacy objective.

02

Survey

Frequently asked

Answers before you plan the retrofit.

Can smart film be installed on my existing glass?

Often yes, provided the glass is suitable, smooth, accessible and in good condition. SEG checks the surface, dimensions, edges and electrical route before confirming the installation method.

Is the film transparent when the power is on?

PDLC film changes from frosted to a transparent state when powered. It is not identical to completely bare glass, so viewing angle, ambient light and the selected film should be considered during specification.

What happens if the power goes off?

The standard configuration returns to the frosted privacy state when power is removed. This behavior is useful for applications that prefer privacy by default.

Can it be controlled with a remote or sensor?

Yes, compatible installations can use wall switches, remotes, sensors and selected smart-control integrations. The control route should be agreed before installation.

Can smart film be used in bathrooms?

It can be considered for suitable bathroom glass, but moisture, direct water exposure, edges, sealants and electrical safety require careful review. Laminated smart glass may be preferable in more demanding conditions.

How should self-adhesive smart film be cleaned?

Use the care method provided at handover. In general, avoid abrasive tools, harsh chemicals and excessive liquid at film edges or electrical connection points.
