SPD Smart Glass (Adjustable Tint Glass) in Dubai: Control Glare and Daylight
Variable-tint glazing for daylight and glare control. Explore an SPD solution matched to the glass construction and exposure of your UAE project.
SPD smart glass uses a layer of suspended particles to change how dark the glass looks, so you can cut glare and keep the view. It differs from PDLC glass, which switches between clear and frosted for privacy. Standard SPD rests in a darker state without power. SEG supplies and installs it after a free survey.
SPD smart glass uses suspended particle device technology to vary the tint of glazing. It is considered when the main goal is managing bright daylight and glare while keeping a view through the glass. Its effect is different from the frosted privacy appearance of PDLC glass.
A sun-facing lounge, office elevation or selected roof-glazing application may benefit from adjustable tint, but the whole glazing system needs assessment. SEG | SMARTEGLASS supplies SPD smart glass and reviews, glass construction, control requirements and installation suitability for projects across Dubai and the UAE.
What it gives you
- Adjustable tint for changing daylight conditions
- A view through the glazing rather than a frosted privacy surface
- Tint controls considered alongside the room's intended use
- Glazing and electrical details reviewed as one system
- Solar performance assessed using the selected product data
How it works
An SPD layer contains small suspended particles. An applied electrical signal changes their alignment and the amount of light passing through the layer. Standard SPD systems rest in a darker state without power and become lighter when energised. The available tint range and intermediate settings depend on the selected film and controller.
Tint is only one part of façade performance. Glass build-up, coatings, insulation, orientation and shading all influence the result. A darker appearance does not by itself establish a heat-reduction percentage or an energy saving. For exterior use, the proposed assembly must be assessed for the project's thermal, structural and weather requirements.
At the design stage, identify the panes to be controlled together and the position of the power supplies. Share elevation drawings, orientation and the main concern, whether it is glare on screens, brightness or solar exposure. This helps establish whether SPD is appropriate and what information is needed from the glazing supplier.
SPD glass for sunny UAE rooms
SPD makes sense when the problem is light, not privacy. A lounge with a wall of glass facing the afternoon sun, an office elevation where glare hits screens, or a room where you want the view but not the brightness: these are the rooms it is considered for.
Orientation is the first thing we ask. Which way does the glass face, how large is it, and what is the main complaint: glare on screens, general brightness or solar exposure? Send an elevation or a photo of the room, and note the time of day when it is worst.
Glass tint is only one part of how a glazed wall behaves. Glass build-up, coatings, insulation, orientation and shading all affect the result. A darker look does not by itself establish a heat reduction or an energy saving, so this page gives no energy-saving figures. If you need them, they have to come from the product data for the complete glazing assembly. The datasheet is available on request.
SPD is not the choice when you need frosted privacy. In a bathroom or a meeting room, PDLC is the usual option. We will tell you if your room is better served by something else.

PDLC vs SPD smart glass
| PDLC (privacy glass) | SPD (adjustable tint) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it changes | A liquid crystal layer switches between frosted and clear | A particle layer changes how dark the glass looks |
| Look when off | Frosted | Darker resting state for standard systems |
| Look when on | Clearer, with some haze that can remain | Lighter. The range and any in-between settings depend on the product. |
| Privacy or glare control | Visual privacy, not a blackout | Glare and daylight control with a view kept. It does not frost. |
| In a power cut | Frosted | Returns to the darker state |
| Suits | Meeting rooms, bathrooms, privacy on demand (laminated smart glass or self-adhesive film) | Sun-facing lounges, office elevations, glare on screens |

SPD Smart Glass FAQs
Practical answers to help you plan your project.
What is SPD smart glass?
SPD stands for suspended particle device. A thin layer of tiny particles in the glazing changes how much light passes when a signal is applied, so the tint can be adjusted. It is used to manage daylight and glare while keeping a view through the glass.
PDLC or SPD: what is the difference?
PDLC switches between frosted and clear, which gives visual privacy. SPD changes how dark the glass looks, which controls glare and keeps the view. Choose PDLC for meeting-room or bathroom privacy, and SPD for sun-facing glass where glare is the problem.
Does SPD glass give privacy?
Not in the frosted sense. SPD changes tint, not clarity, so it does not blur the view like PDLC does. A dark SPD tint should not be assumed to give the same privacy as a PDLC panel. Tell us your privacy needs and we will say which suits.
Where is SPD glass used?
It is considered for sun-facing lounges, office elevations and, in some cases, roof glazing, where the aim is to manage daylight and glare. Each location is assessed for the whole glazing system, including support, weather exposure and power.
What affects the price of SPD smart glass?
Glass type, size, hardware and installation. For SPD that includes the glazing assembly, the controller and power, and site access. SEG supplies SPD smart glass. We quote in writing after a free site survey.
Can SPD be used for skylights?
It may be suitable in a purpose-designed roof-glazing assembly. Overhead safety, structural support, thermal behaviour, weather sealing and access for maintenance must be checked for the specific installation.
How do I request an SPD quotation?
Send the glazing dimensions, drawings, project location, orientation and control requirements. SEG will assess the application and available system before confirming the quote and lead time.
