Smart glass lets a meeting room switch between clear and private at the touch of a control, with no blinds. It suits glass-walled offices that need both openness and confidentiality. It needs power and a controller, so plan the wiring early. SEG surveys free, then sends a written quote.

Where offices use smart glass

Glass walls bring daylight into the middle of a floor plate and help a team feel connected. The trouble is that some conversations should not be seen. Smart glass handles both. The room stays open between meetings, then goes private when it needs to.

Common places:

  • Meeting rooms and boardrooms. Clear while empty or in informal use, private for client or board discussions.
  • Director and HR offices. Daily openness, with privacy for sensitive conversations.
  • Interview rooms. Private during interviews, open afterwards.
  • Medical or consulting rooms. Privacy for patients or clients, without solid walls.
  • Reception areas. A glass boundary that can be closed off when needed.

Our office glass partitions page covers the framing systems used around these rooms.

Smart glass, blinds, frosted glass and fluted glass

There are four common ways to give a glass room privacy, and each behaves differently.

Smart glass (switchable) Clear glass with blinds Frosted glass Fluted glass
Privacy control On demand, by switch or control Manual, open or closed Fixed, always private Fixed, partial
When private Frosted state. Diffuses light, not a blackout. Blinds down. Can be near full cover. Always Always, partly see-through
When open Clear Blinds up Never fully clear Never fully clear
Moving parts None in the glass. Needs a power supply and controller. Blinds, cords or motors to clean and repair None None
Needs power Yes Only for motorised blinds No No
Fits when The room switches often between open and private You want a simple, manual option You always want privacy You want texture and partial privacy

Details on the fixed options are in our guide to fluted vs frosted glass.

Film on your existing partition, or new smart glass?

You have two routes.

Smart film on existing glass. If the partition glass is in good condition, you can often apply self-adhesive smart film to it. This suits tenants who want privacy in a space they did not build, and fit-outs where the glass is already in. Read more in our guide on applying smart film to existing glass.

New smart glass panels. For a new partition, or where glass is being replaced, laminated smart glass has the switchable layer sealed inside the panel. Panel sizes, holes and edge connections are agreed before production.

At the survey we check which route suits your glass.

What to plan

Smart glass is electrical, so a little planning prevents big problems later.

  • Power point. Every smart glass panel or film needs a feed to its power supply. Agree the route with your electrical contractor before ceilings and walls close.
  • Controller and switch. Typically a wall switch. Smart glass can be connected to automation systems, and the control method is confirmed in your quote.
  • Wiring route. From each panel's edge connection to the supply, with maintenance access.
  • Door hardware. If the partition includes a glass door, its hardware, lock and closer are coordinated with the panels.
  • Fixings. Glass is heavy. Head and floor fixings need a solid structure, not a plasterboard bulkhead.

We confirm all of this at the free survey.

Fit-out with little disruption

Our own installation team does the work. Installation typically takes about 7 days after the survey, depending on project scope.

UAE offices usually have building rules on access, lift use and working hours, and tenants may need landlord approval for works. Tell us early so we can plan around them. Installation is normally carried out during working hours, and any exception is discussed at the survey. Site passes and permits are needed on site: the client arranges passes and approvals with building management, and at the survey we tell you what access we need.

Privacy and the limits

Smart glass controls what people can see. That is all it controls.

  • It does not block sound. Switching privacy affects sight, not hearing. If a meeting must be acoustically private, treat acoustics as a separate specification for the whole partition.
  • It is not a blackout. The private state scatters light and still lets diffused daylight through. Close silhouettes and strong backlighting can show.
  • Some haze may remain even in the clear state.
  • A power cut leaves it frosted. Standard PDLC glass is private when unpowered and clear when powered. Confirm the behaviour of the proposed glass and controller.

For rooms with strong sun on outside-facing glass, SPD smart glass is a separate option designed around adjustable tint and glare control. Ask us whether it suits your room.

Using it with a projector

Projection on frosted smart glass is possible, so one room can handle both privacy and presenting. If you want a dedicated display surface instead, ask about projection film. Plan the glass or film, the projector and the room lighting together.

What affects the price

We do not publish a price list. Four things drive the quote: glass type (film, laminated, or SPD), size and number of panels, hardware (power supply, controller, door hardware) and installation. Building access and working hours play a part too. A free site survey gives you a written quote for your actual partitions.

Send your meeting-room photo or plan

Send a photo of the meeting room and its glass, or a plan, with rough sizes if you have them. We arrange a free site survey within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

What is smart glass for offices?

Smart glass, also called switchable glass, changes between clear and frosted at the touch of a control. In an office it gives glass walls privacy on demand, without blinds. It needs a power supply and a controller.

Is smart glass good for meeting rooms?

Yes, where you want an open glass look most of the time and privacy for some meetings. It is less useful if a room is always private, because fixed frosted or fluted glass is simpler. It does not block sound.

Can smart film go on my existing glass partition?

Often, if the glass and frame are suitable. We check the glass type, condition, size, edges and cable route at a free survey. If the glass is unsuitable, new smart glass panels are the alternative.

Smart glass or blinds: which is better for a meeting room?

Smart glass gives instant privacy with no moving parts in the glass, but it needs power and a controller. Blinds are manual, need no electrics and can give fuller cover. Choose by how often the room changes state, how it should look and what you want to maintain.

Can you see through smart glass at night?

In its frosted state the glass scatters light, so you cannot see detail. But a brightly lit room next to a dark space can still show shapes and silhouettes, especially up close. It is not a blackout, so check a sample under your own lighting.

Is smart glass worth it? What are the downsides?

It is worth considering when a glass room needs to switch between open and private often. The downsides: it needs electrical work and a controller, it is not a blackout, some haze can remain when clear, and it does not block sound.

What happens to smart glass in a power cut?

Standard PDLC smart glass returns to its frosted, private state when power is removed. Clear needs power. Confirm the behaviour of the specific glass and controller you order.

What affects the price of smart glass for an office?

Glass type, size, hardware (power supply, controller, door hardware) and installation. Access and working-hours rules also matter. We quote in writing after a free site survey.
