Laminated Smart Glass (Switchable Privacy Glass) in Dubai
Purpose-made glass with an integrated PDLC privacy layer, supplied and installed for new glazing and replacement panels across Dubai and the UAE.
Laminated smart glass has a switchable PDLC layer sealed between sheets of glass. The panel looks clearer when powered and frosted when power is off. It is made to size for new partitions or replacement glazing. To keep your existing glass, smart film may suit instead. SEG compares both at a free survey.
Laminated smart glass combines glass sheets with a switchable PDLC layer inside the panel. It gives you controllable visual privacy with the active layer protected within the glass construction. Standard panels appear clearer with power on and frosted with power off.
This option suits new partitions or projects where glazing is being replaced. It can separate a villa bedroom from an adjoining space, provide meeting-room privacy or support a carefully planned hotel interior. SEG | SMARTEGLASS coordinates the glass specification, electrical connection and installation for projects in Dubai and across the UAE.
What it gives you
- Switchable privacy integrated within a complete glass panel
- Exposed glass surfaces that suit a clean interior finish
- Glass construction selected around the opening and its use
- Control positions planned with the electrical and interior layout
- A coordinated supply and installation scope
How it works
The PDLC layer is enclosed during glass manufacture. Applying the specified electrical supply aligns the liquid crystals for a clearer view; removing power causes light to scatter. This changes visibility rather than providing total darkness. The final appearance depends on the glass, the active layer, lighting and viewing angle, so a sample is useful when privacy expectations are particularly demanding.
Panel dimensions, holes, notches and edge connections need to be agreed before production. The glass build-up must suit the fixing method and intended application. Lamination alone does not establish a specific acoustic, impact or fire rating; those requirements need evidence for the complete proposed system.
For installation, we review frame depths, edge protection, cable routes and access to the power supply. A clear scope also identifies who provides the electrical feed and when the surrounding finishes can be completed. Share drawings and the room layout early, especially for moving doors or areas exposed to moisture.
Smart glass for UAE homes and offices
Laminated smart glass is a new-glass choice, so it fits where glazing is being built or replaced. In UAE homes that is often a villa bedroom divider, a bathroom screen, a home office or a feature partition. In offices it is meeting rooms, director offices and consulting rooms.
Power and control sit near the glass. Each panel has a protected edge connection and needs a compatible power supply. Plan the cable route, the position of the switch and who provides the electrical feed before ceilings and walls close, because reaching them afterwards means opening finishes again. Smart glass can be connected to automation systems.
Bathrooms and other wet areas need a closer look. Moisture, glass edges and electrical protection are reviewed before we recommend the product for the location.
Panels are made to size. Dimensions, holes and cut-outs are agreed before production, and a finished panel cannot be resized on site. That is why the free site survey happens first.
Our smart glass is designed for UAE heat and humidity. That is a design aim, not a published test result or rating. If a panel faces strong sun, tell us when you enquire.
Smart glass changes visibility. It is not a blackout, and it does not by itself make a room quiet.

Laminated smart glass vs self-adhesive film vs SPD glass
| Laminated smart glass | Self-adhesive film | SPD glass | |
|---|---|---|---|
| New or existing glass | New panel, made to size | Supplied and applied by our own team to suitable existing glass | A specified glazing assembly |
| Look | Clearer when powered, frosted when off. Some haze can remain when clear. | Same switching, as a film on the glass surface | Variable tint with a view kept. It does not frost. |
| Adjustable? | Yes, by switch or compatible control | Yes, by switch or compatible control | Yes, tint set by a controller. Settings depend on the product. |
| Suits | New partitions and replacement glazing needing privacy on demand | Keeping suitable existing glass | Glare and daylight control, not frosted privacy |

Laminated Smart Glass FAQs
Practical answers to help you plan your project.
What is laminated smart glass?
It is glass with a switchable PDLC layer sealed between sheets, made as a complete panel. With power on it looks clearer, and with power off it looks frosted. The active layer sits inside the glass, so the outer surfaces are ordinary glass.
What is switchable glass?
Switchable glass changes between clear and private at the touch of a switch. PDLC glass does it with a liquid crystal layer that is clear when powered and frosted when not. It needs a power supply and a control, and it is not a blackout.
Do I need to replace my glass to get switchable privacy?
Not always. Suitable existing glass can often take self-adhesive smart film instead. If the glass is damaged, unsuitable, or you are building a new partition anyway, laminated smart glass is the route. We check the glass at a free survey and advise.
Is switchable glass worth it?
It is worth considering when you need privacy only some of the time, as in a meeting room. If privacy is always wanted, fluted or frosted glass needs no power and has no controller. Smart glass adds wiring and controls, so weigh them against how you use the room.
What happens in a power cut?
Standard PDLC glass returns to its frosted state when power is removed, so the room goes private. We confirm the behaviour of the glass and controller you choose before you order.
PDLC or SPD smart glass?
PDLC switches between clear and frosted for privacy. SPD changes tint to control glare and keeps the view. For meeting-room or bathroom privacy, PDLC is the usual choice. Our SPD smart glass page explains the difference.
What affects the price of smart glass?
Glass type, size, hardware and installation. Within that: panel size and shape, glass build-up, edge processing, controls and power, and site access. We quote in writing after a free site survey, based on drawings.
Can the panel work with a smart-home system?
Integration may be possible through a compatible controller or interface. SEG needs the automation requirements early to coordinate switching, power provision and responsibility for the control connection.
Can laminated smart glass be cut after manufacture?
Do not plan to resize a finished smart-glass panel on site. Dimensions, holes and any cut-outs must be agreed with the manufacturer before production; later processing can damage the glass or active layer.
Does laminated smart glass block sound?
No sound result should be assumed from the smart layer alone. Sound isolation depends on the complete partition, glass build-up, seals, doors and surrounding construction. Ask for a specified assembly if sound performance matters.
